What the Heck is Prison Golf ?

Every weekend, my husband Brett plays golf in federal prison—with murderers, drug dealers, and gang members. Yes, you read that correctly.

Brett (my husband) is serving time for white-collar crimes, so naturally, he has become the “best” Prison Golfer on the compound. But what’s even more incredible than the game itself is what happens when they play.

Breaking Down Barriers

Each week, Brett tells me how beautiful it is to see all the different “gang members” come together on the field to play. These men normally hate each other, but Prison Golf is helping them form unlikely, lifelong friendships.

I just try to imagine my husband—who doesn’t even use swear words—standing among a group of buff, tattooed men, teaching them to swing a pitching wedge at a softball-size wiffle ball. Many of these men have never played golf in their lives, yet they’ve become addicted to Prison Golf, and love playing with Brett.

More Than a Game

Prison Golf isn’t just a pastime—it’s a classroom of life skills for these guys. It teaches them:

  • Honesty
  • Teamwork
  • Patience
  • Resilience

In a very dark place, Prison Golf provides moments of light. It helps these men grow as people so they can return to society as better neighbors.

Brett’s Mission

Brett has made it his mission to be a positive role model while he’s in there. He wants to show these men that they can use their time in prison productively—to prepare themselves to come home as better fathers, husbands and people.

Every day when we talk on the phone, he tells me how much fun Prison Golf is—and how it’s the one thing so many of the men look forward to all week long.

In his words:

“It feels like real golf, but everyone can play it. Once you try it, you’ll get hooked.”

For Brett, it’s more than just a game—it’s the highlight of the week, a break from the darkness, and a way to build community inside those prison walls.

This isn’t just golf. This is Prison Golf—a game that’s building bridges, restoring hope, and changing lives one round at a time.

How Does Prison Golf Work?

  • There are 9 holes and you play each hole twice for a total of 18 Prison Golf holes.

  • Each hole is about 50yds to 75yds long from the "tee box" to the "pin."

  • You hit a softball size wiffle ball (Prison Golf Ball) as hard as you can on most holes just like a regular shot in golf.

  • Only 1 single club is needed to play Prison Golf. You just need to carry around your pitching wedge. This will be your driver, iron, wedge, and putter.

  • There is NO PUTTING in Prison Golf. Instead of "putting" you try to "chip" your Prison Ball into the "bucket" or have your ball "touch" any part of the "bucket."

  • If your Prison Ball hits any part of the bucket your team has successfully finished the hole. (Ex. Lets say it takes your team 3 strokes to succesfully "hit/touch" the bucket with your Prison Ball. On that hole your team scores a 3.

  • However, if your team is able to "chip" the Prison Ball into the bucket your team gets to deduct 1 stroke from the hole. (Ex. Lets say it takes your team 3 strokes to successfully "chip" your Prison Ball INTO THE BUCKET. You would get a 2 instead of a 3.

  • In Prison Golf you want to score the lowest possible so "chipping" into the bucket really helps your team score well.

  • All of this might sound super easy but according to Brett it REALLY is NOT!!!

  • The 50yd to 75yd holes require FULL golf swings and trying to "chip" into the bucket causes your heart to pump just like a 10 ft putt to win the skin. Brett loves playing Prison Golf because it "feels" like regular golf. It's not just some cheesy backyard game. I think he also likes it because he finally gets to feel like a good golfer.

  • Prison Golf is typically played in a team format. Two people per team and you play the best hit ball everytime. This allows for fun and fast play.

  • Oh there are even hazards in Prison Golf. Sidewalks turn into water, playgrounds become sandtraps, and trees are a Prison Golfers worst nightmare.

  • 18 Prison Golf holes typically takes 1.5 hours to finish. I gurantee you will want to keep playing once you finish your first round.

My Heart and Why I'm Putting Together a Prison Golf Tournament

Prison destroys families. Right now, my family is feeling the devastation of mass incarceration. What most people don’t realize is that the innocent wives, mothers, and children serve the prison sentence right alongside their loved one.

Brett is my person, my best friend, and an incredible husband. Every single day I pray for a miracle that will bring him home. Our children—Cambria, Willow, Lula, and Zion—are left without their father to hug them goodnight, pray with them, and reassure them that everything will be okay. They ask me daily: “When is Daddy coming home?”

No matter how you feel about my husband’s mistakes, the truth is that our family is serving a harsher sentence than he is. Mass incarceration and long prison terms destroy families.

I now live the daily reality of being a “single mom” with four kids. Our little family is now emotionally and financially in shambles. Currently I'm doing everything I can to pay my rent and bills, but it is just NOT enough. It breaks my heart to think of all the other moms out there affected by mass incarceration.

One day, Brett said something that changed everything:

“Noel, I know this sounds crazy, but you should do a Prison Golf Tournament. If it works, you can pay your bills—and invite other single moms to help so they can pay theirs too.”

At first, I thought it was impossible. But my heart kept tugging, and the bills kept piling up. A few days later, I decided: our family is going ALL IN on Prison Golf.

We will be the first family ever to host a Prison Golf Tournament. My dream is to grow Prison Golf into something much bigger—a movement that helps countless other moms and families who are left behind to pick up the pieces.

It may sound ambitious, even crazy. But I believe that’s where God shows up.
